Centennial Park’s Nativity Scene
In December 1953, a life-sized nativity scene, commissioned by Harvey’s Department Store, was first displayed at Centennial Park. It was considered the largest nativity display in the world at the time and visiting the creche became a cherished tradition for many Nashville families, including mine.
Positioned in front of the Parthenon, the nativity scene combined local history, and art, fostering holiday spirit in a unique and memorable way. Although it no longer exists, it remains a nostalgic memory for many of us who experienced it.
The display featured 123 total figures: 45 human figures and 78 animals. It spanned approximately 280 feet long and 75 feet deep and was illuminated with colored lights and often accompanied by Christmas music.
The Nativity Scene was closed after the 1967 season due to maintenance costs and deterioration. The figures were sold and the display was discontinued shortly afterward.
